Acid Jazz: Eddie Piller & Gilles Peterson
Founders of 'Acid Jazz Records' and early pioneers of the sound.
Founded in 1987 by Eddie Piller and Gilles Peterson, Acid Jazz Records basically created the genre. Well, maybe they branded it, because this kind of music had been around for a while. Acid Jazz Records produced and promoted it though, putting on club nights, eventually buying one, and putting out records (though not only acid jazz records) to this day. The first ever release was “Frederick Lise Still” by Galiano, which really does demonstrate the jazz, groove, funk, and hip-hop elements that are so important for the genre.
Today we are listening to three of Acid Jazz Records’ ‘Totally Wired’ compilations, a good mix of old jazz from the 1970s, other influences of the genre, and some of the labels releases. Each compilation is over ten years older than the next, which gives for an interesting perspective of the evolution of the sound. Enjoy.
